Setting Expectations

...

This experienced teacher discusses her approach to setting expectations for her pupils in a Suzuki violin lesson.

There are transferable elements in the method - finding ways to model what is happening in the lesson and what to practice at home. Communication to parents can be explored verbally, through the practice diary and/or email/text parent. The connectivity of lessons is a crucial aspect. Follow up on the expectation is important in the next lesson and clear planning are all involved in the process. The teacher here has an intrinsic desire for the pupils to do well, a strong personal commitment to progress and a structured series of performance opportunities are provided. These many strands come together to build structure to the musical offer for the pupils.
